Martin Cilia – Everest

Lockdown in Australia has given us all time to reflect on what we’re doing. It’s been so long since I’ve had extended time in the studio instead of always being on the road. This has meant that I’ve had time to write new songs, but also go back and find older material that has never been released. The Everest album combines new songs along with some older songs that I recently found on old reel to reel tapes. It’s a very guitar based album with the guitar playing the tunes/melody. Everest has 11 tracks ranging from rock to blues to acoustic and even a few slightly funky moments.

Mount Everest is about as far away on Earth as you can get from the beach. I’m most often associated with surf guitar music. This album has more of a bluesy/rock feeling, somehow the same, but different from my usual Surf Rock. I hope you like it.

North Melbourne Surf Club

The North Melbourne Surf Club came out of David Briggs Production Workshop in North Melbourne, Australia. After finishing a project together, David Briggs and Martin Cilia got to chatting. Martin mentioned to David that he’d like to meet Tony Naylor. They’d communicated a bit online, but Martin wanted to meet him in person, as he’d always liked his guitar playing. So David, Tony and Martin got together one day at the studio. After a couple of glasses of red wine it was decided they should record an instrumental guitar album together.

They recruited old friends, Geoff Cox to play drums and James Gillard on the bass guitar with David producing. Joe Camelleri guests on sax on Souled Out.

The band’s name is a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that North Melbourne is nowhere near a beach and is a couple of hours drive from the nearest Australian surf break. This didn’t stop the guys from making great surf music!

The album was recorded the ‘old’ way, where the band played live together in one room, 10am – 6pm over three days. In fact, there was possibly more time spent sharing stories of the road than actual recording!

The Capitols have developed a unique sound by combining classic instrumentation with contemporary arrangements and are noted within the music industry for their great musicianship, style and professionalism.

The Capitols – Suburban Boy Single

It is with great pleasure that I endorse the rebirth of a couple of my favourite songs, Suburban Boy and A Million Miles From Home on this single by The Capitols. I’m also very excited to hear Did You Know? recorded. Martin Cilia and I wrote this some time ago and now Martin and The Capitols have produced what I think is an infectious pop/r&b tune.

Thirty years on from the original release it’s great to hear the ska/reggae influenced version of Suburban Boy which I’m pleased to say has held up well over time. Maybe I’m biased but the song doesn’t seem to have dated. The same goes for Million Miles From Home which is always among the most popular of my live repertoire. It’s exciting to hear somebody else perform this.

Rock on!
